The Crooked River is 50 miles in length and is the largest tributary to Sebago Lake, the primary drinking water supply for 200,000 people in the greater Portland area.
The crooked river supports one of only four known indigenous populations of landlocked Atlantic salmon in Maine and is the primary spawning and nursery area for such salmon indigenous to Sebago Lake.
Keep your eyes out for bald eagles, there are nests up and down the river!

Swimming – A Refreshing Escape!
Whether you're wading in for a quick cool-off or going for a full swim nothing beats cooling off in the river on a warm day! The water is clean, crisp, however we recommend wearing swim shoes, while the riverbed is sandy you may find sharp shells or natural debris. And since the current flows, be sure to keep a close eye on little swimmers to ensure a safe and fun experience.
Kayaking – Paddle at Your Own Pace!
Grab a kayak and let the river guide you on an unforgettable adventure! You’ll find life jackets in the bin to the right at the top of the loft stairs—safety first!
For the best experience, we recommend paddling upstream first (facing the river, go left against the current). This way, when it’s time to head back, you can drift effortlessly with the current—a perfect way to end your paddle!
Feeling extra adventurous? For a longer trip, If you have a truck or kayak racks, drop your vehicle off at The Songo Locks—just 2 miles away by land. This 3-4 hour journey down the Crooked River, offering a peaceful yet exciting paddle through nature.
No matter how you explore the river—swimming, floating, or paddling—it’s all about embracing the great outdoors and making memories on the water. So grab your gear, hit the dock, and let the adventure begin!

A place to recharge
Our stay was amazing. The amenities are off the chart, I say that with many Verbo rentals under my belt. The property is is beautifully maintained and perfect for teenagers and puppies alike❤️. The river front,the upper and lower decks were perfect for morning coffee and quiet reflective time. I wish I had booked more days❤️

What a great get away!
If you are looking for a quiet and charming place to stay, this place is it! It is clear that the owners have great pride in their place and amazing hospitality. The cabin was immaculate and so well furnished. The kitchen was extremely well stocked. The location on Crooked River is great. So nice to sit on the dock and relax. Over the years we have stayed in a number of vacation rentals and this one tops the list. Thank you for creating such a welcoming “home away from home”.
